“Do not wait to strike till the iron is hot, but make it hot by striking.”

– William Butler Yeats, Irish poet, dramatist and writer (1865-1939)

As a beauty photographer for over a decade, I’ve had the privilege of working with countless models from all over the world, each bringing their own unique essence to the shoot.

However, every so often, someone stands out not just for her photogenic beauty, but for remarkable professionalism and eagerness to contribute positively to every aspect of the creative process. Even if that means getting out of her way to do things that other models aren’t willing to do.

One such model is Jessica Cook, whose proactive approach and dedication to her craft inspired me to hound her until she agreed to share her outlook on the profession with me and those who read my scribbles.

Her article was originally published on my Master Beauty Photography website: WHAT IT TAKES TO BECOME A SUCCESSFUL BEAUTY MODEL, and I wanted to mention it over here for those who can use a little boost of inspiration and motivation in this field.

Her insights are great for everyone interested in what it takes to succeed in the competitive world of beauty modeling, but also serve as a reminder for all of us creative professionals to always search for ways to expand our skillsets and understanding of the craft.

Check out what behind-the-scenes actions and attitudes have helped her turn every opportunity into a stepping stone towards greater success.

On my third test as a beauty model, I found a true connection with the photographer – we had good communication and were having a lot of fun. I wanted to take this opportunity to ask as many questions as I could milk from her, but all I could think of was a blanket, “What is your biggest pet peeve as a beauty photographer?”
